Discover why senior dogs rule: Fall in love with Lotto

Feeling lucky and ready to fall in love with an older dog? Then take a chance on Lotto! This handsome Wheaten Terrier is looking for his forever home.

muttville.org

Lotto was found as a stray in Los Angeles. Lotto has been through a lot of transitions recently, so he’s looking for a home that’s on the mellow side where he can blossom into the fun loving and goofy dog we know he is!

We think Lotto is 7-9 years young, weighing about 30 lbs.

Meet him at Muttville on Rescue Row in San Francisco.

Maddie's Fund President Rich Avanzino will retire this summer

There are few people in animal welfare I admire more than this guy, Richard Avanzino. When I first started writing about dogs after adopting my first dog from the San Francisco SPCA, I learned about a man who fought for the life of a little dog named Sido. As the President of the SF/SPCA in 1979, Rich stood firmly against the current California law that allowed someone to “destroy an animal like a piece of furniture." Thanks in part to his efforts, the law was changed and Sido was given a second chance.

"San Francisco Superior Court Judge Jay Pfotenhauer ruled that the right to dispose of property after death does not extend to killing a living creature."

There is no doubt if my big dog Cleo had been around at the time of Sido, she would have been euthanized, but fortunately perceptions and practices changed, thanks to the work of Rich, the SF/SPCA and Maddie's Fund. I will always be grateful to them.

Maddie’s Fund® announced that its president, Rich Avanzino, will retire this summer [...]

Dog walk ends in perfect nap with pug

When an artist is a dog lover they never seem to fail to capture the essence of our relationship in their painting or illustration. Behold this beautiful and peaceful image from, My Favorite Things, a book by Maira Kalman. Can't you feel how relaxed these two are on the grass, sharing a special quietude? It brings to mind my memories of similar moments with my dog on our living room rugs.

Nine ways an old dog shows that they love you

It has been such a gift to have a dog grow old with me. Adopting her as an adult made our experiences interesting, and after our years together, I'm convinced that senior dogs rule.

Spending time together I learned about her likes and dislikes. We discovered her favorite, over-the-moon, reward. Hint, liver or sardines, in either order, or even better, together.

Living with my first old dog had me experiencing life in a new and unexpected way, giving me a point of view that helped me better understand my aging parents.

Too cute! Golden Retriever tries to play with computer pal

Dog lovers can be tricksters, even to Goldens, who are dogs everyone adores! After watching this video, I hope the owner of the computer has damage insurance, because if I was that dog, I'd be pounding my big meat paws all over the keyboard in frustration.

I feel for you Josie, this is not what a dog trainer would call setting you up for success. Besides, Goldens can open cupboards, refrigerators, get money out of an ATM and more. Golden Retrievers are clever and super friendly, so why you can't get that computer dog to give you the toy to play with too must be very frustrating.

If you need to take a swipe girl...

Why do we love old dogs? Have you seen Kiki yet?

There are many sweet senior dogs who are blind like Kiki who show us that you don't need eyes to live.

Well, that's one way to sleep in a bed. #shibainu #noeyesnoproblem

My own dog lost her vision but navigated very well for years. Being surrounded by people who loved her kept her sassy personality front and center. I think she even slept like Kiki at times.
