If only we could train her to woof "I love you"

What's so great having a Husky Shepherd dog? When she gets in touch with her Siberian Husky genes, images from Call of the Wild come to mind. She curls into her tail for a nap, dreaming of Arctic winds or marches us down the street as if pulling a sled. Years ago our neighbors told us they heard her lonely woo woo when she was alone for a few hours. Her genetic code includes vocalization but since we rarely leave her alone anymore, she has no reason to howl.

Volunteering can help cure the holiday and winter blues

Pets Are Wonderful Support PAWS does more good for low income seniors and the disabled than many nonprofits, in part from community support and the hundreds of amazing volunteers. People who believe in the power of the human-animal bond are the reason this privately funded nonprofit has been around for 25 years.

PAWS volunteers believe in the value of keeping people and their pets together. That an animal companion can alleviate depression. That the unconditional love an animal gives is deserved to be experienced by everyone.

Puppies are cute but some of us prefer a grey muzzle

Don't get me wrong, I think puppies are really lovable and cute. I love all dogs but when a grey or white muzzle does the same thing as a puppy, I'm over the moon with joy. That huge happy grin my old blind dog makes when she navigates successfully to another room, kills me every time. She tries to play tag but misses by a mile, and I love her more.

Her energy level is also just right. My old dog doesn't wiggle out of my cuddles like a puppy would. Sure she has her time limit for affection, but today we're talking minutes rather than seconds. Spend a little time with a senior dog like Cleo, and I bet you can add to this list of five things an old dog does better than a puppy [...]

Do you have a lot of love to give? If you need a canine dance partner for the holidays and New Years, we have your perfect match. Meet sweet George, a medium size blend of Retriever and love.

Sweet as the day is long, George is a really awesome boy who was never treated well till now. This dog has a smile - which is rare and so cute. George has a zest for life and would be a great dance partner! He will make you swoon, he is so handsome. He has a few patches on his skin where the hair is growing in nicely with proper nutrition, luscious golden hair. We think he is 8-10 years old but acts younger.

George would be great in an active home where he can be loved and cherished!

Come meet him quick at Muttville!

5 Beautiful Gift Ideas for the Holidays and Beyond

For me, the holidays are a time of giving, shared moments with friends and family, and taking time to reflect on the year. In addition to buying from local companies, I care about buying from companies that give back to their community. I'm also drawn to organizations that offer a special gift in exchange for a donation this time of year. Why not wear what matters to you for all to see? Caring about elderly dogs never goes out of style, which is why Muttville shirts made our list this year. Smelling nice is something every dog battles with. Having your home smell like the beach or at least a light soap scent is possible with candles we found by a Southern California company that supports organizations dedicated to ending the homeless pet population, and raising awareness about spay and neuter.

Closer to home, when you give to San Francisco's own PAWS, Pets Are Wonderful Support they offer a limited supply of beautiful note cards for a modest donation. Across the border, a Canadian company that sources and makes all of their pet products also supports Search and Rescue Dogs of Ontario. Finally, one of the most beautiful gift ideas that tops our list is a photo book.

Here are five beautiful gift ideas ...

The perfect holiday gift for the dog who has everything

I'm pretty sure that my spoiled pooches have more than they need. What do you get the dog who has everything?

Holiday card outtake #2

As a wise cat once said (thought bubbled?), "It's not the giving. It's not the getting. It's the loving." So, this year, I'm going to give the gift of love.

Adoptable Senior Dog of the Week: Stanley

Meet Stanley, a happy little blend of Chihuahua and Dachshund. This adorable dog came to Muttville all the way from Huntington Beach, where he must have been a surfer because this boy is in great shape.

Sweet Stanley weighs 15 lbs and is a young 7 years of age. This little guy is so happy and acts like a puppy most of the time. He's full of energy!

He has quickly become a volunteer favorite. He has a charm and gentleness about him that radiates fun and love. He is a smart and quick learner, too. very attentive. He is great with the other doggies and would love a playmate in his new home.

His photos do not do him justice, you must meet him in person, but only if you want to fall in love! Find him at Muttville!
