Celebrating Life with a Senior Dog: Gentle Ben

Send us your photos, we're celebrating Senior Dog Adoption Month on Grouchy Puppy!

Choosing to adopt an older dog can be the best decision you make all year. Speaking from my experience of having an elderly dog, I know how sweet they are. Slow walks together are special for you both, allowing you to unwind and take a deep breath. Senior dogs can also be as big a cuddle monster as any puppy. Why adopt an elderly dog? Because no matter how much time you have together, it will be enriching and I bet your heart will grow stronger from being influenced by the experience.

Meet another wonderful older dog, this time from Texas

Ben was a rescue from Houston, TX. I adopted him from my brother when he moved. He passed away in July. One day short of his 15th birthday. He was just awesome.

8 reasons why I'm thankful for having a senior dog to celebrate Thanksgiving with this year

image from www.grouchypuppy.comDo you know what I'm grateful for this year? I'm thankful that eight years ago, my newly adopted dog didn't choke to death or die from internal damage done by consuming the turkey carcass. Not to sound so dramatic but it's true, and I have witnesses.

Before we get to that infamous story, Thanksgiving this year is special for us. I've embraced the fact that I've an elderly dog. This year, rather than getting up to watch the Macy's parade live (6:00AM for us), we'll let our senior dog sleep in, but expect that our family photos will still look something like this later in the day. And though it means a few extra leg lifts, we are now used to cooking the big holiday meal with this furry road block

SF SPCA Holiday Windows Return to Macy's Union Square

One of the best (and sometimes worst) things about social media is that it's about sharing. Remember how much #SFBatKid was shared recently? Definitely that was social media sharing at its finest. Now this week, it's time to share the best holiday window displays we have in downtown San Francisco. It's a tradition I've loved since it began with standing in line outside of Gump's.

It's time for the Annual San Francisco SPCA Holiday Windows at Macy's Union Square!

Last year nearly 300 dogs and cats found homes through this event, and more than $80,000 was raised to support the SF SPCA's lifesaving programs. The SF SPCA Holiday Windows at Macy's is just one of the many ways the SF/SPCA is trying to end animal abandonment in San Francisco by 2020. Over the past nine years, the Holiday Windows have helped the SF SPCA find homes for over 2300 animals [...]

Celebrating life with a senior dog all November: Meet Pugs

Send us your photos, we're celebrating Senior Dog Adoption Month on Grouchy Puppy all November!

This sweet story comes from Utah. Meet Pugs

image from www.grouchypuppy.com

I just thought that I would share a picture of me with my new friend, 'Pugs'. I do some volunteer work for the Humane Society of Utah and came upon this old fellow's picture and description on the adoption web site. It stated that his estimated age was 12 years old. He looked sad in the picture and I just had to go see him. The rest is history!

Pugs has a new home and we have a new friend. Pugs will now have the rest of a very comfortable life with my wife and me. Also, he doesn't look sad any more!

Adoptable Senior Dog of the Week: Shiloh

Yes, I use the word "sweet" frequently when describing senior dogs, but it's a perfect descriptor, especially for Shiloh. Look at this little snuggle buddy? She's an adorable blend of Whippet and Chihuahua and ready for adoption.

Meet this pretty little dog at Muttville.

This little whippet-chi is dainty, yet agile and energetic, too! Little Shiloh is 11 years old and a dainty 10 pounds.

She enjoys running on the beach and snuggling up in your lap all in one day! She is super social and pretty easy going, too. She is quiet and is ok with other dogs.

Another dog treat? Nah, I'm good.

"Another dog treat? Nah, I'm good," said no dog ever.

Cleo's tail may wag yes, while her head shakes no, but  if she ever turned down a dog treat, I would take her immediately to the vet because this behavior meant she was really sick (and not in the way kids say it when they mean neat or cool).

I wanted to contribute to the photos of life with senior dogs to help encourage people to adopt more of them. So here's a picture of Bunny Shorty Bits and I on our first vacation together in Palm Springs. Bunny was adopted in June 2009, and this picture was taken in December 2010.

Hugs and kisses from us both to Cleo!

What do you tell people who don't "get it"? 5 responses to non-dog people

I'm a dog person.  Most of the people I know and spend time with are dog people. If you are reading this post I assume that you are a dog person.  But there are some people in my life, that I love dearly, who do not share my enthusiasm for dogs.  And for me, that is 100% okay.  I can't make anyone like dogs any more than they can make me like tomatoes or raw oysters.  What's important to me is that they accept me completely as I live my largely canine-centered life, even if they don't have the same opinions or beliefs.  What can you do, though, when dealing with someone who doesn't seem to respect your dog's place in your life?  What do you do when someone doesn't "get it"?
