We have started a weekly questionnaire called Influence Positively featuring pets (who have humans who type for them) and people answering five questions. The common thread is that everyone who answers will be involved in pet adoption, community involvement, pet advocacy and related areas we care about.
We want to highlight some of the decent qualities and unspoken traits found in individuals who make up our world. They are the fabric of our society and demonstrate how to give fearlessly. Here is our third participant in the series:
Shauna lives on the west coast of Canada, with her husband and two dogs. She writes for a blog called Fido & Wino about dogs and wine and going to the gym and trying to be zen.
Shauna launched the R.O.A.R. Squad in April 2010. It stands for Rescue Owners Are Rockin’ and the Grand Master Plan there is to highlight how incredibly COOL inviting rescue animals into your home is. In the next year she is going to recruit people from every province in Canada and every state in the U.S.A. to join. It’s going to be awesome.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I am really, very happy right now. At the risk of sounding completely annoying, I'd have to say that what I've got going on right now is fabulously, imperfectly perfect: - Cool hubby who finds my quirks amusing and plays hide-and-go-seek in tall grass with my dogs: Check! - Goofy dogs who remind me not to take myself too seriously: Check! - Family and friends who love and support me: Check! Okay, but if I HAD to answer: A pleasantly full glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in hand, lounging on a dog-friendly patio (perfectly behaved dogs asleep at my feet) along side my family and friends on a sunny Friday afternoon that never ends. Sigh.
If you could come back as a dog or a cat, which one would it be & why?
I'm a dog person, but I think I'd like to come back as a cat. I am reading Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home (Rupert Sheldrake) right now and there is a section on the amazing homing abilities of animals. Dogs are good. but it looks like cats are really good. I'd like to know what having a sense of direction feels like.
What is your pets most treasured possession?
Mickey, my bossy, brown terrier, absolutely loves his little squeaky Bad Cuz toy. Bad Cuz has wee devil's ears, so Bad Cuz is pretty much the rubber version of Mickey. Kayloo, my rescue dog, loves everything Mickey loves... exactly when Mickey pays attention to it. When Mickey likes the ratty old spare sock, Kayloo LOVES the ratty old spare sock. Much to Mickey's chagrin.
Your proudest achievement so far?
A couple weeks ago I went for a walk with a girlfriend of mine and her daughter. My dogs came along and as we walked the little girl slowly fell in love with Kayloo, my rescue dog. My friends' daughter asked me what a rescue dog was and I told her a little bit about adopting pets and the importance of looking out for the animals in our care. At the end of our walk she gave Kayloo a big hug and said to her mom: "Mom, I want to get a rescue dog!" I'm not sure how happy mom was that her daughter was now going to harass her for a pet, but I was so proud of Kayloo for inspiring in that little girl the desire to consider a rescue pet when the time comes.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My parents rock.
