Appreciate the contributions older dogs and senior citizens make

It's no secret that we adore old dogs around here. Through my time and experience with my senior dog Cleo, I've increased my appreciation for senior citizens, in particular my aging family members and neighbors. Both have contributed a lot to my education. If you have older people or senior dogs in your life, August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day, when we all can recognize and celebrate their role in our lives.

The secret to a good life? Give yourself a chance to experience the joy of having a senior dog in your life. They give more than they get, and are incredible companions, teachers and even therapists.

President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Senior Citizens Day in 1988. In his explanation he wrote that, “Older citizens are reinforcing their historical roles as leaders and as links with our patrimony and sense of purpose as individuals and as a Nation.”
