Among the volunteer workers who contribute to the well-being of a community are those who donate their time to our hospitals and other health care centers. Administrators will tell you that the role played by volunteers is vital to the all-around care provided to patients.
It might be a surprise that some of the important volunteers are not of the human sort. At Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, an entire hallway features the photos of 31 therapy dogs, and their owners, who have given many hours of service. The hospital identifies them as “volunteers whose goal is to comfort, entertain, and help the patients to recover.”
